Population Served: At-risk individuals and families in Charlotte-Mecklenburg.
History: Loaves and Fishes was founded in 1975 when concerned community members came together and created the first coordinated food pantry in Charlotte at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church. Loaves and Fishes has never turned anyone away due to lack of food and is a nationally recognized model. In March of 2020, Loaves & Fishes and Friendship Trays merged to strengthen their capacity to tackle all the phases of food insecurity in Charlotte.
Approach: Loaves & Fishes | Friendship Trays is a network of emergency food pantries and the primary Meals on Wheels program in Mecklenburg County providing nutritionally balanced groceries for neighbors in need and healthy prepared meals for those unable to prepare or secure meals for themselves.
