Mission: Provide safe emergency shelter while working to end homelessness for each man.
Population Served: Homeless men in Charlotte-Mecklenburg.
History: Operating as the sole emergency shelter for homeless men in Charlotte, MSC is the result of a 2009 merger between the Uptown Shelter and Emergency Men’s Shelter. The past 3 years, 1,200 men found more appropriate housing, leading to a reduced demand for overnight emergency shelter.
Approach: Through the equation Income + Housing + Support = End to Homelessness, MSC helps men end their experience with homelessness and move into more appropriate housing. MSC supplies hundreds of nightly year-round beds at their two campuses, meals, clothing and case management services to help clients identify and overcome barriers related to homelessness including substance abuse, mental illness, unemployment, and health.
