Savannah Demuynck

Our new Resident Pastor

We welcome Savannah Demuynck as our new Resident Pastor. Savannah will serve at Myers Park for a two-year term. She is a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill and Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Between college and seminary, Savannah served as a Young Adult Volunteer with the PC(USA). She worked with South Florida Interfaith Worker Justice where she developed a passion for social justice and a commitment to living out Jesus’ call to love the least of these in the world. While at seminary Savannah served as an intern with University Presbyterian Church in Austin. She worked as a research assistant for a faculty member and she served as chapel beadle, helping to plan and lead worship for the seminary community.

In her own words:
I was baptized and raised in First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, NC. My family was very active throughout the life of the church. For as long as I can remember, I have been passionate about faith and God. And for most of that time, I have been told if you can do anything else, besides becoming a pastor, you should. In college at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I tried Chemistry and Math, and yet it was the religious studies classes that captured my attention and my campus ministry where I found my home.

I came to seminary excited to learn and I am leaving excited to serve.

Savannah’s references described her as one of the most talented students to have come through Austin Seminary in recent years. One part of her Statement of Faith which captured our attention is: “I believe that Jesus calls us into authentic community with one another and to be Christ’s body in the world. This often looks like church, which is a beautiful mess of people trying their best to figure out how to live faithful lives.” Our Residency Committee looks forward to “trying to figure this out” with her at our side.

About the Pastoral Residency Program

This two-year residency program is for seminary graduates who hold particular promise as pastors and wish to develop their ministerial skills under dedicated supervision in a large church setting. This is an ordained position in which Resident Pastors serve and learn alongside the staff and congregation of Myers Park Presbyterian Church.

Resident Pastors will have ongoing opportunities for worship leadership and for pastoral care. They will have focused times serving in faith formation, administration, and outreach. Resident Pastors will also explore ministry in a smaller church setting in the Charlotte area in order to gain experience that will help in discerning a call. In the second year, each Resident Pastor will be encouraged to focus on a specific ministry area or project that will deepen personal skills for ministry.
