IRA rollover benefits Myers Park Presbyterian Church

Stewardship is about the gifts we receive, the gifts we give and how we care for those gifts. Gail Wilkins and Howard Freese have shared their love of music and their musical talents with our church for many years.

In addition to sharing their musical talents, they give faithfully to the annual budget. In thinking about how music and the church has been an integral part of their faith journey, and with a little help from a financial planner, Gail and Howard learned that by using their IRA required distribution they could leave a legacy gift to the church.

If you have saved for your retirement through an IRA, and are 70 ½ years or older, you are required to take a minimum distribution. For IRA owners who do not need the distribution, the donation (individuals can transfer up to $100,000 annually) is a good way to minimize taxation and help the church at the same time! In addition to the tax benefits, Gail and Howard remarked, “We were drawn to the benefit of giving while we are alive to be able to enjoy being part of the process and seeing the outcome of our gift.”

Gail and Howard prayerfully decided to use their IRA distribution to establish the Gail Brinn Wilkins and Howard L. Freese Music Fund through the church’s endowment. The fund will support the music program above and beyond what the general operating budget covers. Gifts to the endowment continue our faithful stewardship and support the mission and ministries of our church in perpetuity.

Gail and Howard reflected, “We have been blessed to have music in our personal lives since early childhood with musical opportunities in church, school and with music lessons. Classical music, as well as other styles and forms, make our lives full and rich. We trust that our gift to support the music of Myers Park Presbyterian through the endowment will make a difference in glorifying God with His gift to us, the gift of music. This universal language can bring peace, love and harmony to the heart and soul.”
