I finished reading The Ninth Hour over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The author, Alice McDermott, is an easy storyteller sharing a story about grace, sacrifice and family. Sometimes we read sweeping novels that cover lots of territory but this one is more of a deep dive into a very particular context and a small set of characters. This novels focus on the Irish Catholic community in Brooklyn in the early 20th century and the nuns that served there. The book opens with a suicide and that event is the background for all the unfolds.
We will discuss this book at BookIt! at Myers Park Presbyterian Church on December 13 at 12:30 pm. I hope you will read the book and join us. (And extra credit if you come with a theory about the book’s title!)
